Next Destination: PHUKET. 24-26 Dec 2010

Phuket, the biggest of the 1000s of islands sprinkled around Thailand’s coastline, is a magical blend of everything a holidaymaker or expatriate could dream of. Swaying palm trees, white sand beaches, restaurants galore and exhilarating nightlife.

On Phuket Island (which is connected to the mainland by the Sarasin Bridge), budget hotels, guest houses and roadside noodle stalls co-exist comfortably with luxury 5-star resorts, fine dining international restaurants and multi-million-dollar villas owned by some of the world’s top household names. About the same size as Singapore, Phuket is Thailand's second wealthiest province (after Bangkok).

While restrictions on hillside and beachside development have preserved much of the island’s natural beauty, Phuket’s infrastructure is well-developed – although around 80 percent of the land on the island remains forested, providing mountain vistas, sea views and jungle walks that are rare in a major tourist destination.

Phuket was not always about tourism. Well before the first backpackers discovered Phuket, its twin claims to fame were tin mining and rubber. As we get well stuck into the 21st century, the open cast tin mines have gone – some turned into marinas and others into luxury resorts – while the rubber plantations are slowly succumbing to housing and resort development. Nevertheless, about a quarter of Phuket’s land is still given over to rubber plantations.

Phuket is roughly 50 kilometers from north to south and 20 kilometers east to west at its widest point. Depending on traffic, you can drive the whole length of the island in about 1-2 hours. The west coast is home to long sandy swimming beaches and most of Phuket’s bigger resorts. The east coast faces out onto Phang Nga Bay and, with one or two exceptions, is not ideal for swimming. Most east coast resorts offer transfers to nearby islands (as little as 10 minutes by boat) for those who want a traditional day baking on the beach.

Although really deserted beaches are largely a thing of the past on most parts of the main island (there are still one or two exceptions), Phuket really does cater to every possible whim. Incredible beaches, jungle-covered hillsides, yacht marinas, superb tropical climate, vibrant (and in places naughty) nightlife, great food, international-standard shopping and countless little islands all within easy reach.

A little...

"I am excited to see you again! Are you excited to see me too?"

" A little..."

"A little only...?"

"......"

"And does that mean YES?"

"....."

"I'm still thankful for that "little" excitement in you of seeing me again...at least there is. And I will let that grow from seed to tree...strong and stable...with its leaves waving for happiness...with shades of calmness and sincerity and overall shineness of love."

"Fabulous! You're such a poet."

"Yes, I am...because of love."

The Beauty of Running

Being fit and trim has always been my goal (and will forever be, hehehe) that is why I joined the club of those people running the pathwalks morning and night.

I just started to regularly run when I registered for Nike City Run last October and from then on I see to it that I run at least 2x a week (well, still striving as I have not been consistent lately, sorry...) I can say I’ve done pretty well as I already have the stamina built-up to run 10KM. A big difference from before where I can hardly breathe after a 2km track. My goal of being fit and trim is on the way, I'm pretty sure. I just need to carefully observe my food intake and diet. It should complement my running program.

I'm also been driven by vanity when it comes to my actual running. With the help of my good friend Joni who has convinced me that running is great, I had my feet analyzed and identified as to what category so that I can buy the right kind of running shoes fit for me. I also bought Nike shirts, running shorts, wrist band, running socks....Yes, its all Nike...another good excuse for my love for shopping (forgive me credit card!)

They say that jogging/running burns 300-450 calories in 30 minutes, better than basketball with 258 calories and swimming with 250 calories. And I'm clinging to these facts. After all, we need to be responsible for our own health. As the saying goes, health is wealth.

Xin Chao Vietnam!

A 3-Day Trip to Ho Chi Minh and Mui Ne.
First day. 16072010, TR2326 0735hrs, five backpackers departed Sg. We arrived Tan Son Nhat Int’l Airport at 0840hrs, met Ms Dao, our tour guide. We all jumped inside our 15-seater van and directed our way to Bui Vien St, District 1 to pick-up another of friend of mine who came from Tokyo. While on the road, we witnessed millions of motorbikers chasing through the traffic. Not exagerrated. There are millions of motorbikes in Vietnam, almost 1:1 ratio with its population.
Journey began. 1st Stop, Cu Chi Tunnel, 1.5hrs away from HCM Central.
We drive-thru Jollibee for mobile lunch. Everybody were excited pcking-up their favorites and very affordable.Chicken Joy Meal for less than 100K dong. Yummy! Langhap sarap talaga!
Around 1200hrs when we explored Cu Chi Tunnel. With an admission fee of 65,000 dong, you will enter a 75-mile long complex of tunnels. We personally experienced 30-m of dark and narrow tunneling, and of course, took hundreds of pictures.
While on our way back to HCM, rain poured heavily, so the guide rerouted to the handicapped handicrafts factory. People there were talented, creative, artistic, detailed, skillful.
It was still raining heavily when we reached the city so we decided to postpone the city tour due to rain. 1700hrs when we checked-in at Saigon Mini Hotel 5 at 196 Bui Vien Street. At 1800hrs, we street-walked for food under the drizzles. Directed to Pho 2000 Resto which is very near Ben Thanh Market, we had a bowl of pho noodles. The best of its kind! 2 thumbs up!

We then shopped at nearby Ben Thanh Street night market. I bargained patiently for some nice wall frames featuring Viet woman body silhouette in black and white effects, bought two and a set.
On our way back to Bui Vien Street at 2200hrs, we chilled-out for some Saigon beer and night life in the nearby corner bar. There were dozens of Westerners in town. Great crowd, great music, cool atmosphere. Ended with couple of glasses of vodka.
Second day, 17072010. At 0700hrs we woke up to English breakfast, then checked-out at 0830hrs ready for Mui Ne, a 5-hr road trip from HCM. We stopped over a mall to grab some food and drinks. Travel continued. Pictorials inside the van. A typical Viet province along the way, rice fields, dragon fruit plantation, etc.
We arrived at Phan Thiet with colorful fishing boats welcoming us from afar. Reached Tien Dat Resort, Mui Ne at around 1430hrs. It was such a lovely place, fit for relaxing, nice swimming pool. There was Mr. Khanh, our guide for that afternoon. Checked-in the resort quickly. At 1500hrs we drove ourselves to the north end. There was a little creek, the Fairy Stream, that winds its way through the sand dunes. Stream’s bottom is super soft sand and mud. We had fun walking through in bare feet.
After a mile of enjoying the stream’s mile, we headed to fishing village, where you can find lots of colorful fishing boats plus the round-shaped native boat they use.
It was about 1700hrs when we headed to Red Sand Dunes. The illusion of being in a different world was there with the exotic scenery of the famous Red Sand Dunes one side and the white sand beaches with palm trees on the other. We had hundreds of captured scenes in this beautiful Saharan desert, Vietnam version.
Mui Ne, which means sheltered peninsula in Vietnamese
and the surrounding Binh Thuan province really have a lot to offer. Beautiful tropical beaches lined with groves of swaying palm trees, immense Saharan-style sand dunes meandering for kilometres in colours of red, yellow and white; tall mountains with bamboo rainforests, and deep red canyons parted by twisting streams.
We ended the day with a Vietnamese-style massage for 200K dong and a treat of G7 Vietnamese coffee, which tastes like heaven.
18072010 was the third and final day of our trip. It started with a sumptuous breakfast from Tien Dat Resto. Then we packed-up and checked-out. All set and ready to be back to HCM.
We arrived HCM City around lunchtime. We went straight to Ben Thanh market to not miss shopping. I loved every moment as we saw stuffs at very affordable prices. Grabbed a 70L aircontact Deuter, a The North Face Daily backpack and a red Crumpler body bag, all in less than 100SGD. Great! They don’t seem to be original but was 100% contented the way it was neatly sewn and its quality. Of course, I never missed to grab 2 boxes of G7 Vietnamese coffee.
Notre Dame Basilica de Saigon
Since we still have time, with the use of my iPhone application showing images of tourist spots in Vietnam, we guided our driver for a quick city tour. We showed him photo of a church and voila! He knew it! Notre Dame Basilica de Saigon, the city’s main church inspired by French colonial architecture. Just nearby the church was the Gothic architecture-styled Saigon Central Post Office.

Then we showed him photo of a palace and he nodded. He drove us to Reunification Palace, formerly known as Independence Palace, a historic landmark and the site of the end of Vietnam War, during the Fall of Saigon in 1975, when a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its gates.
Reunification Palace
The rain poured heavily. Stomachs begging for lunch. Another Jollibee on the way, so we stopped and had a 30-minute dine-in. Chicken joy, spaghetti, peach mango pie and vanilla cone twirl. Full and satisfied!
Finally we headed to the airport to catch our 1725hr flight back to Sg, except 1 of my friends who flew back to Japan the next day.
It was indeed an amazing experience! Next stop? Cambodia. Hopefully. =)

Over a Platter of Tony Rama's, a Cup of Starbucks and a Spoonful of Positivity

It was Thursday night when I suddenly felt I miss some of my Sg kaberkz. We have not grouped together for a while so I quickly decided to invite them to meet up. Unfortunately they're not available for a very short notice meet-up so I re-scheduled to Friday night. Two out of six confirmed so it's a date for me.

These two beautiful ladies were the least I expected to turn-up due to their busy careers and personal lives so I must be a very lucky guy. After work, I rushed to the MRT to be at our meeting place by 7:30pm. I met one of them and we picked Tony Rama's to feed our hungry stomachs.

From the menu itself, all images and descriptions are mouth-watering. We can't contain our hunger anymore so we quickly placed our orders. Of course, a half-slab of famous baby back ribs basted with Tony Rama's original bbq sauce. We also chose 2 entrees. Mine was baked potato and corn on the cob.

Minutes later, I recognized a waving hand on the restaurant's main glass door. There she was. Another friend of mine arrived and she completed the date triangle. She ordered the same and we started to chat.

At first it was just light and bubbly until we emerged to the topics of depression, rejection, failures and all negativities. It was all ears for me to listen to their stories- lovelife, family, career, self. Hearing from them seemed like it was their first time to pour out all emotional baggage they have inside. They admittedly say that they are not the vocal type to let all know what they've been and are going through. For them, they assess the right group of people, preferrably a few to listen to their stories and hopefully get some pieces of advice.I was touched that I belong to the few that they trusted.

The platters of baby back ribs arrived and we enjoyed every piece of sumptuous ribs served while having a very deep but inspiring conversation. After they shared some of their thoughts on being depressed, fear of failures and rejection, it was my time to share positive thoughts in life, on how I managed to uplift and embrace my life to positivity, being the most positive person among the three of us (I supposed).

I am no perfect individual. I have ups and downs as well but I'm trying my best to learn from my experiences and from the experiences I heard from others. I believe that it is your choice to see things on a brighter side rather than on a darker side. This perspective will then exudes positivity on how you manage life's complexities. And through this, I believe that we need support system- our family and friends, but amongst all, it's God and you.

We finished our dinner and I voluntarily announced that I'll be treating the two of them a Starbucks coffee so we immediately headed our way to the nearest Starbucks place.

The coffee shop was full so we ended up sitting on the extended tables and chairs they arranged outside. Not so comfortable but it's fine. Well, trying to be conscious with their bodies, they ordered a cup of hot peppermint tea while I settled for a grande of Caffe Mocha. We continued our chitchat and I observed that they were beginning to add positive spices as they talk about things in life. We continued to share things about our families, our education and career and of course the never-ending, over-trending lovelife. As what my other bunch of friends say, they commented that I have the Dr. Love character in me, even if I don't have a lovelife myself (well, it's not that nobody likes me...it's just a choice for now..hahaha). We shared the thought that you have to love yourself first before you can give love to others...that in a relationship, it is not at all fun but struggles and sacrifices are there to make you stronger. The important thing is that at the end of the day, you can say that you're genuinely happy. And we concluded that happiness is truly a choice..it has always been my choice, and from then on, it became their choice too.

The clock tick-tack to 12 midnight so we finished our cups and rushed to the MRT. Just when we reached the counter station, the guard said the last train already left. We took the escalator up and queued for a taxi.

A Mother's Love

A Mother's love is something

that no on can explain,

It is made of deep devotion

and of sacrifice and pain,

It is endless and unselfish

and enduring come what may

For nothing can destroy it

or take that love away . . .

It is patient and forgiving

when all others are forsaking,

And it never fails or falters

even though the heart is breaking . . .

It believes beyond believing

when the world around condemns,

And it glows with all the beauty

of the rarest, brightest gems . . .

It is far beyond defining,

it defies all explanation,

And it still remains a secret

like the mysteries of creation . . .

A many splendoured miracle

man cannot understand

And another wondrous evidence

of God's tender guiding hand.

A poem by Helen Steiner Rice especially dedicated to my everdearest Mamang.

Happy Mother's Day! I love you very much!

My New G-shock Watch

Just last week, I was fascinated with the array of colorful, well-designed G-shock watches in one of the watch shops in Jurong Point. One design caught my attention so I decided to buy it.

It's a G-RESCUE G7900 model from its shock and water resistant G-Shock watch line. This G7900 derives its inspiration from search and rescue teams worldwide.

This G-shock digital watch features a trendy big case with superior hexagon protection, made by 4 large screws on the bezel and side to form a superior line of defense. The largest buttons in G-Shock history improve button operability, even while wearing gloves. For a high performance fit and superior shock resistance, the G-RESCUE features back case shock absorbers to stabilize the watch and protect case from impact.

The G-RESCUE G7900 is a new shape for the G-Shock family of watches, but embraces classic G-Shock technology. Additionally, the G-Rescue features low temperature resistance, able to withstand temperatures as low as -4°F.

Other amenities include shock resistance, 200M water resistance, moon and tide graph, auto EL backlight, flash alert, world time, four daily alarms, 1/100 second chronograph and 12/24 formats.

From the display rack, there were 4 available trendy colors- rugged black, eye-catching white, active bluish grey and the brave army green. I picked the third one.

My three Filipino collegaues in the company also decided to buy the same design but chose different colors. Now it seems like the four of us form a new breed of"Power Rangers".

How Hard Work Can Help You Get a Promotion at Work

(by M. Barnes, www.ezinearticles.com)

Be the best that you can be. You don't have to necessarily be better than everyone else in the workplace. You just have to work harder and longer than they do. Hard work is the number one thing that every employer looks for. They want to know that you will continue to do the work even if you've had a bad day and think you need a break. They want to know that if they give you a lot of work that you will do it, no questions, complaints, or trying to pass the work onto another coworker. Hard work is the basis for every goal that the employee hopes to accomplish. It will get you the promotion, for it gives you the chance to prove that you are valuable and that you are willing to take on a little more work if it becomes necessary. The employers want to know that if they get into a bind, you will be there to help them get out of it.

What is hard work exactly? Hard work is going above and beyond to get the assignment done. It is finding something to do when you accomplish one task and have not yet been given another one. Hard work is learning about other areas of the workplace and finding different things that you can do to apply yourself to help out in each area, while still doing the tasks allocated to you. It is also talking to the employer and finding ways to improve and then applying them to the way that you work. You want to tell your employer that even though you may not be the best at what you do, or that you make mistakes, that you will learn new and better ways to apply yourself and learn from the mistakes that you make.

You must be willing to work longer hours without asking for a raise, or demanding that you get credit. They will know that you apply yourself wholeheartedly to the job and that you do everything that you are asked and more. If you do ask for a raise or credit, they will come to the belief that you are not working to better the company. They will believe that you are trying to get more money out of them and they may even forget all of the things that you do for the company. When you do not have any more to do and cannot think of anything else that needs doing, ask the employer for more. A little more work never hurt anyone, and in this case, it will definitely improve your chances of being promoted. Hard work is the necessity of the employer.

If you can do the work that you are assigned plus more, you will be taking some of the load off of your employer, and they will realize this and reward you appropriately. So, whether you are looking for a raise or a management position, or even just a bump in the employment pyramid, apply yourself to the job the best that you are able to do. They give you the hours and you are being paid for them, so just do as much work as you can possibly do during that time and you would be as valuable as gold to them, and you will get the "bump" that you want, maybe more.

Good News, Bad News

Confirmed. Bad news always comes with a good news!

Just last week I realized this. I received the bad news that the owner of our condo unit decided not to renew our contract after the end of the current one expiring on July 2010 because he is selling it. Indeed a bad news for us 'coz we love the place very much. Tailing this news is a good news I received from WSHC that my story entry for Creative Writing Category won as one of the three commendation winners.

Just today, there is a bit of a sad news I received related to work, though not really directly affecting me. I can't put details for confidentiality purposes. But the big good news which Ate and I are constantly praying for almost 3 weeks now is that she passed the MOM examination, so she's back of working again here in Singapore...an OFW again, not anymore a tourist.

God is really good all the time. Actually, the bad news are not really bad  in its real sense because these are just boulders of struggles and challenges to make us a better person..to make us do better things for ourselves and for others.

Rental Scam Alert

Last week, Ate Ging and I learned from our main tenant that the unit we have at Parkview Apartments is already for sale by the owner, thus, he will not anymore renew the contract which will end on July 2010. It's quite sad to know that we will soon leave the place 'coz from the very beginning, I love living there-- a perfect place you can call home with the peace, comfort and convenience it offers.

And so the search is on for a new place, or else we find ourselves on streets..hehehe... The easiest way is to surf the internet because there are a lot of websites for property rentals. One thing I did is to post an ad that I'm looking for a place, preferrably a master's bedroom in a condo unit. There were calls and sms from agents, of course, but what suprised me are 3 different emails from 3 different individuals offering a very nice place at a very affordable price, basd on the photos that they attached and the description they gave. A fully furnished room in a deluxe serviced apartment at the heart of the city for only S$700/month! Too good to be true, isn't it?

But still, I partly assumed it to be true so I exchanged emails from them. They even sent me contract and their passport copy but doubts started when they said that 1 month advance and security deposit should be paid via Western Union as they are not currently in Singapore. I asked for viewing schedule but they said that they already sent photos and that they didn't arrange for any property agents prior to their trip so they will just immediately send the keys after receiving the payment.

This led me to search their names and emails in the Internet and I discovered in an online forum discussing about rental scammers and their names appeared on the list given by some of their victims. Thanks for I found this and confirmed my doubts.

Lesson to share is that for those who are looking for places to rent here in Singapore or wherever you may be, basic requirement is you should be able to view the place and sign the contract and do payment in front of the person dealing with the rental (owner/agent). A big NO for a Wester Union transfer! To make awareness, beware of these names- Tan Tong Nee, Nancy Wink and Gautam.

As for me and Ate, we are hoping that we can find a place as "homy" as the one we have now.

Superman in the Mirror

It was Monday. The morning’s gloomy and cold. I woke up late so I rushed. After alighting from the bus, I walked towards the company gate as fast as I could and went straight to the locker room to wear my uniform and PPE. As I was about to step into the blue line where complete PPE are required, a voice shouted at me.

“Hey, hey. Is your head now as hard as mine like steel? Wear your hard hat. Go back. Get it!”

It was Superman with his loud, intimidating voice that stresses my eardrums.

“Thanks for reminding me.”, I quickly uttered.

Tuesday and Wednesday passed safely. He smiled.

“Good job!”, he expressed.

“I know.”, I replied back with pride.

Thursday came. Meetings here and there. With only 5 minutes left before an important meeting starts where I need to report first, I almost took the shortcut when Superman stepped down and stopped me.

“Hey! Where are you going?”, he asked.

“I’m rushing for another meeting. Please get out of my way. I can’t afford to waste any minute or else I will lose my job.”, I insisted.

“Ha! But you can afford to put your life into risk by taking this route with all forklifts maneuvering. Take the safe walkway!”, he commanded with his finger pointing to the nearest one.

As usual, he is Superman so I followed.

Friday passed. Again it was safe. Again, he smiled.

Saturday. Time to rest. I woke up around 10AM and went to the shop for my groceries. On my way home, I realized I forgot to buy my favorite ice cream. I quickly decided to buy from the gasoline station shop just across the road. I was about to land my first leap to cross when Superman pulled me back.

“What’s wrong with you? You are taking a risk by not using the pedestrian lane. Do you really want to end your life soon?”, he shouted with voice coming down into my nerves.

“What are you talking about? Of course I want to live longer. You are too serious about this.”, I answered back.

“This is a serious matter, man. Safety has always been a serious matter. One quick step in taking risk can end your life. That’s it. No turning back. If you care for your future and your loved ones’, be responsible.”, he advised.

I was speechless. I decided not to buy the ice cream anymore so I walked back home. His words kept echoing back in my ears and in my dreams.

Sunday unfolds. Bright and shiny. I was about to hit the shower when I suddenly looked into the mirror. Superman is smiling. Realization sank into me that safety is a responsibility…that if we care for our future, then we need to be safe at all times…that if we cherish life, then we need to act safely…wherever we are, whatever we do.

Our own superheroes are ourselves.

And Superman is no one else but YOU.

(This story was my entry to Singapore WSHC's Safety Starts with Me Competition 2010-Creative Story Writing Category. I just received a call from the organizer that my entry won as 1 of the 3 Commendation Winners. Yahoo!)

Coffee Cups

(Author Unknown)

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups – porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite. He told the group to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said:

“If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups…and then you began eyeing each other’s cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of the Life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us. God brews the coffee, not the cups…Enjoy your coffee!”

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

You are the miracle, my friend, your life either shines a light – or casts a shadow…it’s your choice.

Not so busy Monday

It's Monday and usually I'm a busy bee...checking my emails..talking to my people on some issues encountered in the plant over the weekend, checking for my calendar for series of meetings usually scheduled on Mondays, etc...

But today is different. It's not so busy. Well, isn't it obvious? I have time to write this blog...hahaha..My emails are few and I have read and replied all. Issues in production settled and now I'm just sitting waiting if new concerns arise for me to settle and solve. All reports and presentations for tomorrow's meetings and sessions are all finished. Some of the reports still need to queue as it needs data for today's production so that would be for tomorrow morning's to dos.

Hmm, now I'm wondering what I need to do next with my time? Maybe brainstorm for another work improvement programs..maybe safety-related projects....let me see....

Monthend

I have special anticipation for these 3 coming monthends.

End of April, I'll be able to know if I get promoted or not and of course how much bonus will I receive, hehehe... Results for the creative story competition on Safety will also be out where one of the entries is mine.

End of May, results for NUS Graduate Studies admission will be released. I applied for this 'coz I want to go back to school and be a student again, and of course gain further knowledge on my current job.

End of June, outcome on the PR application will most likely be mailed.

Crossing fingers on these 3 monthends. Well, I already have the mindset of accepting whatever results I will receive-- be open-minded is the key.

And I know for a fact that outcomes will be part of God's better plans for me. =)

Well, well, well...

Well, well, well....i just realized that I need to write more often in my blogsite so as to express all that flows in my mind.

After spending for a couple of hours looking for a nice blog template, there you are...an exotic vacation theme...so i guess it's time for me to blog all my travels.

I've been so lazy lately...and this needs to stop 'coz I've got lots of stuffs to catch up- be more familiar with my Nikon D90, read the photography magazine that I bought, learn the basics of photoshop and lightroom for post photography production and blog all my travels for highlights and travel tips.

Give me strength and a push, Dear Lord.
