Next Destination: PHUKET. 24-26 Dec 2010

Phuket, the biggest of the 1000s of islands sprinkled around Thailand’s coastline, is a magical blend of everything a holidaymaker or expatriate could dream of. Swaying palm trees, white sand beaches, restaurants galore and exhilarating nightlife.

On Phuket Island (which is connected to the mainland by the Sarasin Bridge), budget hotels, guest houses and roadside noodle stalls co-exist comfortably with luxury 5-star resorts, fine dining international restaurants and multi-million-dollar villas owned by some of the world’s top household names. About the same size as Singapore, Phuket is Thailand's second wealthiest province (after Bangkok).

While restrictions on hillside and beachside development have preserved much of the island’s natural beauty, Phuket’s infrastructure is well-developed – although around 80 percent of the land on the island remains forested, providing mountain vistas, sea views and jungle walks that are rare in a major tourist destination.

Phuket was not always about tourism. Well before the first backpackers discovered Phuket, its twin claims to fame were tin mining and rubber. As we get well stuck into the 21st century, the open cast tin mines have gone – some turned into marinas and others into luxury resorts – while the rubber plantations are slowly succumbing to housing and resort development. Nevertheless, about a quarter of Phuket’s land is still given over to rubber plantations.

Phuket is roughly 50 kilometers from north to south and 20 kilometers east to west at its widest point. Depending on traffic, you can drive the whole length of the island in about 1-2 hours. The west coast is home to long sandy swimming beaches and most of Phuket’s bigger resorts. The east coast faces out onto Phang Nga Bay and, with one or two exceptions, is not ideal for swimming. Most east coast resorts offer transfers to nearby islands (as little as 10 minutes by boat) for those who want a traditional day baking on the beach.

Although really deserted beaches are largely a thing of the past on most parts of the main island (there are still one or two exceptions), Phuket really does cater to every possible whim. Incredible beaches, jungle-covered hillsides, yacht marinas, superb tropical climate, vibrant (and in places naughty) nightlife, great food, international-standard shopping and countless little islands all within easy reach.

A little...

"I am excited to see you again! Are you excited to see me too?"

" A little..."

"A little only...?"

"......"

"And does that mean YES?"

"....."

"I'm still thankful for that "little" excitement in you of seeing me again...at least there is. And I will let that grow from seed to tree...strong and stable...with its leaves waving for happiness...with shades of calmness and sincerity and overall shineness of love."

"Fabulous! You're such a poet."

"Yes, I am...because of love."

The Beauty of Running

Being fit and trim has always been my goal (and will forever be, hehehe) that is why I joined the club of those people running the pathwalks morning and night.

I just started to regularly run when I registered for Nike City Run last October and from then on I see to it that I run at least 2x a week (well, still striving as I have not been consistent lately, sorry...) I can say I’ve done pretty well as I already have the stamina built-up to run 10KM. A big difference from before where I can hardly breathe after a 2km track. My goal of being fit and trim is on the way, I'm pretty sure. I just need to carefully observe my food intake and diet. It should complement my running program.

I'm also been driven by vanity when it comes to my actual running. With the help of my good friend Joni who has convinced me that running is great, I had my feet analyzed and identified as to what category so that I can buy the right kind of running shoes fit for me. I also bought Nike shirts, running shorts, wrist band, running socks....Yes, its all Nike...another good excuse for my love for shopping (forgive me credit card!)

They say that jogging/running burns 300-450 calories in 30 minutes, better than basketball with 258 calories and swimming with 250 calories. And I'm clinging to these facts. After all, we need to be responsible for our own health. As the saying goes, health is wealth.

Xin Chao Vietnam!

A 3-Day Trip to Ho Chi Minh and Mui Ne.
First day. 16072010, TR2326 0735hrs, five backpackers departed Sg. We arrived Tan Son Nhat Int’l Airport at 0840hrs, met Ms Dao, our tour guide. We all jumped inside our 15-seater van and directed our way to Bui Vien St, District 1 to pick-up another of friend of mine who came from Tokyo. While on the road, we witnessed millions of motorbikers chasing through the traffic. Not exagerrated. There are millions of motorbikes in Vietnam, almost 1:1 ratio with its population.
Journey began. 1st Stop, Cu Chi Tunnel, 1.5hrs away from HCM Central.
We drive-thru Jollibee for mobile lunch. Everybody were excited pcking-up their favorites and very affordable.Chicken Joy Meal for less than 100K dong. Yummy! Langhap sarap talaga!
Around 1200hrs when we explored Cu Chi Tunnel. With an admission fee of 65,000 dong, you will enter a 75-mile long complex of tunnels. We personally experienced 30-m of dark and narrow tunneling, and of course, took hundreds of pictures.
While on our way back to HCM, rain poured heavily, so the guide rerouted to the handicapped handicrafts factory. People there were talented, creative, artistic, detailed, skillful.
It was still raining heavily when we reached the city so we decided to postpone the city tour due to rain. 1700hrs when we checked-in at Saigon Mini Hotel 5 at 196 Bui Vien Street. At 1800hrs, we street-walked for food under the drizzles. Directed to Pho 2000 Resto which is very near Ben Thanh Market, we had a bowl of pho noodles. The best of its kind! 2 thumbs up!

We then shopped at nearby Ben Thanh Street night market. I bargained patiently for some nice wall frames featuring Viet woman body silhouette in black and white effects, bought two and a set.
On our way back to Bui Vien Street at 2200hrs, we chilled-out for some Saigon beer and night life in the nearby corner bar. There were dozens of Westerners in town. Great crowd, great music, cool atmosphere. Ended with couple of glasses of vodka.
Second day, 17072010. At 0700hrs we woke up to English breakfast, then checked-out at 0830hrs ready for Mui Ne, a 5-hr road trip from HCM. We stopped over a mall to grab some food and drinks. Travel continued. Pictorials inside the van. A typical Viet province along the way, rice fields, dragon fruit plantation, etc.
We arrived at Phan Thiet with colorful fishing boats welcoming us from afar. Reached Tien Dat Resort, Mui Ne at around 1430hrs. It was such a lovely place, fit for relaxing, nice swimming pool. There was Mr. Khanh, our guide for that afternoon. Checked-in the resort quickly. At 1500hrs we drove ourselves to the north end. There was a little creek, the Fairy Stream, that winds its way through the sand dunes. Stream’s bottom is super soft sand and mud. We had fun walking through in bare feet.
After a mile of enjoying the stream’s mile, we headed to fishing village, where you can find lots of colorful fishing boats plus the round-shaped native boat they use.
It was about 1700hrs when we headed to Red Sand Dunes. The illusion of being in a different world was there with the exotic scenery of the famous Red Sand Dunes one side and the white sand beaches with palm trees on the other. We had hundreds of captured scenes in this beautiful Saharan desert, Vietnam version.
Mui Ne, which means sheltered peninsula in Vietnamese
and the surrounding Binh Thuan province really have a lot to offer. Beautiful tropical beaches lined with groves of swaying palm trees, immense Saharan-style sand dunes meandering for kilometres in colours of red, yellow and white; tall mountains with bamboo rainforests, and deep red canyons parted by twisting streams.
We ended the day with a Vietnamese-style massage for 200K dong and a treat of G7 Vietnamese coffee, which tastes like heaven.
18072010 was the third and final day of our trip. It started with a sumptuous breakfast from Tien Dat Resto. Then we packed-up and checked-out. All set and ready to be back to HCM.
We arrived HCM City around lunchtime. We went straight to Ben Thanh market to not miss shopping. I loved every moment as we saw stuffs at very affordable prices. Grabbed a 70L aircontact Deuter, a The North Face Daily backpack and a red Crumpler body bag, all in less than 100SGD. Great! They don’t seem to be original but was 100% contented the way it was neatly sewn and its quality. Of course, I never missed to grab 2 boxes of G7 Vietnamese coffee.
Notre Dame Basilica de Saigon
Since we still have time, with the use of my iPhone application showing images of tourist spots in Vietnam, we guided our driver for a quick city tour. We showed him photo of a church and voila! He knew it! Notre Dame Basilica de Saigon, the city’s main church inspired by French colonial architecture. Just nearby the church was the Gothic architecture-styled Saigon Central Post Office.

Then we showed him photo of a palace and he nodded. He drove us to Reunification Palace, formerly known as Independence Palace, a historic landmark and the site of the end of Vietnam War, during the Fall of Saigon in 1975, when a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its gates.
Reunification Palace
The rain poured heavily. Stomachs begging for lunch. Another Jollibee on the way, so we stopped and had a 30-minute dine-in. Chicken joy, spaghetti, peach mango pie and vanilla cone twirl. Full and satisfied!
Finally we headed to the airport to catch our 1725hr flight back to Sg, except 1 of my friends who flew back to Japan the next day.
It was indeed an amazing experience! Next stop? Cambodia. Hopefully. =)

Over a Platter of Tony Rama's, a Cup of Starbucks and a Spoonful of Positivity

It was Thursday night when I suddenly felt I miss some of my Sg kaberkz. We have not grouped together for a while so I quickly decided to invite them to meet up. Unfortunately they're not available for a very short notice meet-up so I re-scheduled to Friday night. Two out of six confirmed so it's a date for me.

These two beautiful ladies were the least I expected to turn-up due to their busy careers and personal lives so I must be a very lucky guy. After work, I rushed to the MRT to be at our meeting place by 7:30pm. I met one of them and we picked Tony Rama's to feed our hungry stomachs.

From the menu itself, all images and descriptions are mouth-watering. We can't contain our hunger anymore so we quickly placed our orders. Of course, a half-slab of famous baby back ribs basted with Tony Rama's original bbq sauce. We also chose 2 entrees. Mine was baked potato and corn on the cob.

Minutes later, I recognized a waving hand on the restaurant's main glass door. There she was. Another friend of mine arrived and she completed the date triangle. She ordered the same and we started to chat.

At first it was just light and bubbly until we emerged to the topics of depression, rejection, failures and all negativities. It was all ears for me to listen to their stories- lovelife, family, career, self. Hearing from them seemed like it was their first time to pour out all emotional baggage they have inside. They admittedly say that they are not the vocal type to let all know what they've been and are going through. For them, they assess the right group of people, preferrably a few to listen to their stories and hopefully get some pieces of advice.I was touched that I belong to the few that they trusted.

The platters of baby back ribs arrived and we enjoyed every piece of sumptuous ribs served while having a very deep but inspiring conversation. After they shared some of their thoughts on being depressed, fear of failures and rejection, it was my time to share positive thoughts in life, on how I managed to uplift and embrace my life to positivity, being the most positive person among the three of us (I supposed).

I am no perfect individual. I have ups and downs as well but I'm trying my best to learn from my experiences and from the experiences I heard from others. I believe that it is your choice to see things on a brighter side rather than on a darker side. This perspective will then exudes positivity on how you manage life's complexities. And through this, I believe that we need support system- our family and friends, but amongst all, it's God and you.

We finished our dinner and I voluntarily announced that I'll be treating the two of them a Starbucks coffee so we immediately headed our way to the nearest Starbucks place.

The coffee shop was full so we ended up sitting on the extended tables and chairs they arranged outside. Not so comfortable but it's fine. Well, trying to be conscious with their bodies, they ordered a cup of hot peppermint tea while I settled for a grande of Caffe Mocha. We continued our chitchat and I observed that they were beginning to add positive spices as they talk about things in life. We continued to share things about our families, our education and career and of course the never-ending, over-trending lovelife. As what my other bunch of friends say, they commented that I have the Dr. Love character in me, even if I don't have a lovelife myself (well, it's not that nobody likes me...it's just a choice for now..hahaha). We shared the thought that you have to love yourself first before you can give love to others...that in a relationship, it is not at all fun but struggles and sacrifices are there to make you stronger. The important thing is that at the end of the day, you can say that you're genuinely happy. And we concluded that happiness is truly a choice..it has always been my choice, and from then on, it became their choice too.

The clock tick-tack to 12 midnight so we finished our cups and rushed to the MRT. Just when we reached the counter station, the guard said the last train already left. We took the escalator up and queued for a taxi.
